She Spoke Too Soon

  • Aug. 9th, 2009 at 10:14 PM

Hello interweb! I'm back! Remember when I told you that I wouldn't update as frequently... I was right! Hah!

So anywho, let's see what's new! Since last we spoke I've seen 2 cool concerts: Lily Allen and Lykke Li! Both were freaking amazing! Recently I haven't been doing much... I went to Benihana for my girlfriend's birthday last month... it's exspensive! So if you ever get a chance to go.. JUST SAY NO and throw your own damn shrimp in the air but the food was good. As for movies, Zodiac still rocks and Transformers RotF sucks crazyballs!

One more thing! I bought a cool decal sticker for my car! It's a Planet Express sticker from Futurama and I might say that it's the best investment I've ever gotten. Though I haven't gotten a single compliment from my fellow Angelinos...

...someday.

It's Going Backwards

Good after evening Mr. Internet, You know, it was a few days ago when I said to myself, "Darn it, I miss blogging!" Why shouldn't I blog about the crap that I do in the daily void that I call, life? I beLIEve I'm interesting enough for people to follow me for their own self-enjoyment --you sick people, you! Anywho, chances are I'll stop doing this after 2-3 weeks 'cause that's the kinda guy that I am. A ramblin' 22-year-old Mexican-American kid from Los Angeles trying to get his kicks from punches. So let's get this shindig started, shall we? No.

A few weeks ago I discovered yet another amazing HBO show to add to my collection of shows that I enjoy frequently. I am reffering to Flight of the Conchords or should I say, Flight of the Awesomechords! My Favourite episode thus far has to be New Fans. It has everything you ever wanted in an episode: great jokes and acting. And that's hard to get nowadays in this American Idol society... By the way... can't believe she got kicked out -- I mean... stupid idiots.

In the music department, Sonic Youth is still the shit. I was wearing my Sonic Youth Goo shirt yesterday night and my stupid Ass. Manager says to me:

Ass Manager: Sonic Youth? What's that?
Me: It's a band.
A.M.: Oh, so there's only 2 people in the band?

I stop to admire the ignorance of him and throw him a bone... a wrong bone but still a bone nonetheless.

Me: Uh.. yeah, just 2.
A.S.: Like that one cool band, White Stripes.

My dislike for The White Stripes continues to engross.

So anywho, you can already tell that I'm an average 22-yr-old mofo who pretty much thinks that everything else sucks except for, Flight of the Conchords, Sonic Youth and LOST.

Lykke Li's 'Youth Novel'

  • Aug. 11th, 2008 at 8:56 PM

Sweden's Lykke Li's Youth Novel reminds us that there is more than meets the eye. In a world where girls kiss girls just because they, liked it we should ask ourselves, what little more is left?

What Li manages to accomplish is a well-balanced debut album that begs us wanting for more but that is not to say that the album is remotely far from perfection because that would be a tremendous lie and I'm not prepared to lie just yet...

The album starts off with a song entitled, Melodies & Desires; while it is a bizarre gamble, it ultimately fails to confine my consideration. The song could have done more if it was placed towards the end, instead of being the primary song in the first LP.

As I've mentioned before, the album was a roller coaster ride, meaning it had numerous highs but was also accompanied by several lows leaving you very queasy and realizing that your boobs were exposed in the picture embarrassing you even further...

Her assortment of singles are the best with such songs like, I'm Good, I'm Gone urging us to crave more and she manages to distribute that at least three more times with Little Bit with an attractive chorus that devours your soul (in a good way). Let It Fall reminds us of the greatest year of music, 2004 and the sultry/eerie voice of Frou Frou. And, Breaking It Up utilizes a children's chorus which although has been done before in the past -- never seizes to fail. She can also rock the vote with the mellow song, Hanging High that makes this album a pretty kk (translation: ok) album.

With her highs clarified, the album has lows that make us wonder what the hell went wrong? Either she was really exhausted and wanted to the get the album over with or she thought the songs were awesomesauce? This Trumpet in My Head sounds as if she was making up the words/notes as she went… Complaint Department sounds too much like a rejected Ladytron song and the final two songs towards the end really makes me want to punch her but I won't because needless to say, she manages to deliver a descent debut album.

In the end, Lykke Li is one of those up-and-coming artists that we should all be listening to whether you're an indie-junkie or just want to be a cool hipster and say that you're an indie-junkie.

Score: 3/5
